North Central College
For the past several years, John Stanley, assistant professor of speech communication, assistant director of forensics, and director of individual events at North Central College has organized a FSW celebration by creating an exhibit in the campus Oesterle Library Gallery.
The week-long exhibit features posters created by Professor Stanley that relate to different issues concerning freedom of speech. At the bottom of each poster are questions promoting discussion about free speech issues as they relate to each of the posters. Included on the posters were issues such as:
- Artistic freedom
- Flag burning
- A poster on Freedom of Speech in China (offering a cultural perspective)
- Clothing as Freedom of Speech
- Broadcast speech
- Protesting
- The Freedom to Read
Within the exhibit, students and faculty are encouraged to write their responses on sheets of paper on the tables as well as on the chalk boards and white boards within the room. To supplement the posters, a Power Point display mentions things that are not considered protected speech as well as quotes about free speech from a variety of famous people. Videos imbedded within the presentation include one on music censorship.
In addition, the school’s state champion debate team has debated free speech issues to mark the week. Examples of the posters on flag burning, clothing as freedom of speech and artistic freedom below.
